Al-Ḥizb al-Aʿẓam

Attributed to Imam Abū al-Ḥasan al-Shādhilī (d. 656 AH / 1258 CE)

An important Sufi devotional manuscript, written in a clear naskh script in black ink, with headings and key terms highlighted in red. The manuscript comprises 64 folios (128 pages), on handmade Eastern paper of medium thickness, ivory-toned, and without watermarks, indicating production within the Islamic world.

The manuscript opens with two illuminated and decorated pages, featuring symmetrical vegetal motifs executed in hand-applied gold within gilt frames, a decorative approach characteristic of prayer and devotional texts.

The text is attributed to Imam Abū al-Ḥasan al-Shādhilī, founder of the Shādhiliyya order, and represents one of the most widely circulated Sufi litanies in the Islamic tradition.

Bound in dark maroon/burgundy leather, the cover is decorated with a central gilt medallion (shamsa) surrounded by vegetal arabesque motifs within gilt borders. The inner doublures are fully decorated with fine gilt vegetal designs, indicating a luxury binding produced by skilled craftsmen.

Dimensions: 16.5 × 13.3 cm.

Overall condition is very good, with expected wear and edge abrasion consistent with age and use; the gilt decoration remains largely intact.

The manuscript is tentatively dated to the mid–late 18th century CE

(circa 1750–1775 CE / mid-12th century AH) and is most likely of Ottoman Anatolian origin, based on stylistic analysis of the binding and illumination.

A fine example of an Islamic devotional manuscript, combining spiritual significance with refined craftsmanship, suitable for collectors of Islamic manuscripts and book arts.
